Good billiards instructions always start with the same few things. These are the parts of the game you use on every single shot.
Stance. Stand so you are steady and balanced. Your body should not move when you shoot.
Grip. Hold the back of the cue with a loose grip. Do not squeeze it. A tight grip makes the cue wobble.
Bridge. Your bridge hand holds the front of the cue steady. You can use an open bridge or a closed bridge. Either one is fine if it is solid.
Stroke. Move only your back arm, from the elbow down. Keep it smooth and straight, and follow through.
Head still. Stay down until the ball is in the pocket.
These sound simple. They are. But almost every miss I see comes from one of them going wrong.
Reading billiards instructions is a good start. Practice is where they turn into skill. Here is how I suggest you practice.
Practice one thing at a time. If you are working on your stroke, just work on your stroke.
Start with easy shots. Set up a straight in shot and shoot it 10 times. Then move it a little farther away.
Watch where the cue ball goes. Learn what happens when you hit it high, in the center and low.
Keep practice short and focused. Thirty good minutes beats three hours of just banging balls around.
Come back to the basics often. Even good players drift away from them. As I said above, review the fundamentals and then practice what you learn.
There are many ways to get help with your game.
Free lessons like my 7 part fundamentals course are a great place to start. You can find the link on this page.
Books and videos let you learn at home and go back over the parts you need.
A certified instructor can watch you shoot and see what you cannot see yourself. I went to pool school and became a certified billiards instructor, and it changed how I look at the game.
Good players in your area can help too. Watch how they play. Ask questions. Most pool players like to talk about the game.
What should billiards instructions cover first?
Stance, grip, bridge, stroke and keeping your head still. Everything else is built on these.
How long does it take to get better at pool?
It depends on how much and how well you practice. Short, focused practice on the basics brings the fastest progress.
Do good players need billiards instructions too?
Yes. I get letters from good players who say going back to the basics moved their game up a level or two.
When the fundamentals feel solid, you are ready for strategy. My book, 8 Ball Winning Strategies, covers breaking, finding your pattern, safeties and the money ball, with diagrams and video links.
